Unexpected Worldwide Sabbatical: A writing gift to you in these strange times

To my dearest writerly and artistic community–

I am sending you lots of love in such a difficult and uncertain time. I’ve been thinking a lot about the painter, Mark Rothko, who said that abstract expressionism really came as a result of artists needing to say something that had never been said before. Basically, when the world changes, art changes.

So in all this uncertainly, there is something you can do: make art. The world needs artists more than ever in times of crisis. We are the visionaries. I’ve always said that I have no idea how the non-artists in the world handle their emotions! If I couldn’t journal, write, sing…I don’t know what I would do. We are lucky. We have our art.

So to that effect, Kathy Fish and I are going to do a morale-boosting, free 30-day FlashNano-like event starting tomorrow, Monday, March 16, for everyone sitting home in front of their computers and ready to write. We’ll be posting daily prompts (many recycled from FlashNanos of years past or from our retreat “prompt envelope”) on our website (no need to sign up for anything, we are just going to keep it simple), so we hope that this strange time can also be productive and inspiring.

We can’t control the crisis but we CAN control what we do. So let’s make some art. Please be safe and stay healthy and look after each other.
xoxoxo

Editing is the most important part of the writing process. As serious writers, you know it’s through the editing process that we refine and sculpt our messages. But just as writing flash fiction requires a different set of skills, so does editing flash fiction.

Participants should have a basic understanding of flash fiction and come to the class with pieces already in progress. Each participant will have the opportunity to submit 1-2 stories per week. This is an online workshop format class with limited space.

Earlybird special: Regular price $149– $125 until December 8!

And…

Did you miss out on our Colorado retreat last August?

Flash Fiction Summer Camp in the Rockies

How does communing with your fellow writers in a rustic setting in the gorgeous Rocky Mountains sound? How about a chance to clear your mind at high altitude, open your mind to creativity and expansion and take in the “grand” view?

This year Nancy Stohlman and Kathy Fish have chosen beautiful Shadowcliff Mountain Lodge in Grand Lake, Colorado for their summer retreat! Grand Lake is just 1.5 hours north of Denver and is in one of the prettiest areas of Colorado, adjacent to Rocky Mountain National Park.

We’ll spend four days and nights with mountain air, lakeside views, skies full of stars and lots of flash fiction. We’ll generate stories, we’ll sculpt stories, we’ll rest, we’ll share, we’ll conference and we will be inspired together in the beauty of late summer in Colorado, under the August meteor showers. We may even spot some wildlife!

We’d love to have you!
