Many writers, even those who begin beautifully, struggle with endings. Yet, we all know a brilliant ending when we read one. A brilliant ending compels you to say whoa. Then reread. And say whoa again. It can be poignant, messed up, surprising, gorgeous, tragic. But it should punch you in the gut or the heart–and it should leave a mark. It should echo off the page and haunt you all day long. In this class we’ll play with several strategies to rethink and uplevel your endings. You’ve already come this far–you’ve written the breathtaking opening, the humming middle… now it’s time to land the ending. And drop the mic.

This year I’ll be talking about one of my favorite ways to write flash fiction: using the power of implication to manipulate found forms. About the workshop:

“The Wacky, Weird, and Wonderful: Dazzling Narratives and Experimental Flash Fictions”

The constraints of flash fiction have ironically created a new sort of genre freedom, and flash fiction writers are embracing contortions that wouldn’t work in other forms: a motley circus of tightrope walkers and jugglers and trapeze artists plunging against their boundaries and defying narrative in breathtaking ways. In this one-hour workshop we’ll examine, discuss, and take bold risks with experimental narratives, attempting the kinds of literary acrobatics and daredevil antics that emerge when plots are forced to bend in small spaces.

SCULPTING FLASH FICTION

An online workshop January 4-24

Editing is the most important part of the writing process. As serious writers, you know it’s through the editing process that we begin to refine and sculpt our messages. But just as writing flash fiction requires a
bonsai different set of skills, so too does editing flash fiction. In this workshop we will use the tools of ambiguity and implication; we will learn the different between chipping and chopping; we will learn how to shrink-wrap your text, and most of all learn how to achieve the specific needs of flash fiction as I guide you and other participants to edit your real works in progress.

This will be a 3-week online workshop format class with limited availability. Each participant will have the opportunity to submit 1-2 stories per week.
